Fathom allows you to import divisions to further analyse and report on the performance of different areas of your business.
Divisions refer to any departments, job centres, cost centres, locations etc. that you have defined within your source accounting system. The terminology of these divisions differ for each system as follows:
- Xero - tracking categories
- QuickBooks - classes or locations
- MYOB - jobs or categories
Note: It’s not possible to import divisions from Excel into Fathom.
When importing financial data from your source accounting system for the first time, you will have the option to select up to 20 divisions to import into Fathom.

Note: Fathom can import a maximum of 20 divisions for a company. If you have more than 20 divisions, please see the FAQ at the bottom of the article.
Add or remove divisions for an existing company
You can easily manage the divisions that have been imported for an existing company. You can remove divisions, or add new divisions from your source accounting system to be available in Fathom.
To do so, proceed to ‘Step 1 - Update data’ within the company Settings.
Under the heading for ‘Financials > Tracking’, click ‘edit’ to manage your divisions. You can easily select or deselect any divisions to be used within Fathom.
Using Divisions in Fathom
There are multiple ways that you can track the performance of divisions within Fathom.
Creating custom divisional KPIs
You can easily create custom KPIs to track the performance of your divisions.
Any custom KPIs that have been created will be available for use throughout Fathom in the Analysis and Reporting features.

Within the Analysis tools
The Breakdown Analysis tool makes it easy to compare the performance of your divisions for any metric within Fathom.
Additionally, within the Financials Tool, you can click on any line from your Chart of Accounts. This will provide a breakdown of your divisions for that metric.

Within Fathom reports
You are able to filter results by division within Fathom’s customisable reports.
When creating a chart or graph, you will have options to filter metrics by division.
When creating financial statements with comparative columns, you can filter the entire statement by division.
Alternatively, select a division summary to show a financial statement with divisions split out into side by side columns. This division summary is also available for download in Excel.

There are several advanced features within Fathom that require you to import your divisions as standalone entities within Fathom. This means that your divisions will be billable as separate entities.

What if I have more than 20 divisions?
At present, Fathom can only keep track of 20 divisions at any given time.
If you have more than 20 divisions, you can still import your company data successfully into Fathom. However, you will only be able to select 20 divisions to be available for divisional analysis.
Why do I have 'Unclassified' data in my company?
Any company data that has not been allocated to a division will be shown as 'Unclassified'.
This can occur if you have more than 20 divisions. Since Fathom only allows you to bring in 20 divisions at maximum, the rest of the data for the company will be unclassified.
