The Commentary Writer tool enables you to quickly craft insightful commentary with AI.

What are some best practices for the Commentary Writer?

We have the following tips for using the Commentary Writer:

Adding Context & Writing Prompts

  • Use the Business Context and Report Context to tailor the commentary in your report.

  • Use full sentences, proper punctuation, and proper grammar when typing prompts and entering the Business Context and Report Context.

  • Be specific when writing prompts so your intentions are clear.

  • Only provide the Commentary Writer with relevant information, especially regarding Business Context and Report Context.

    • Think about what information you would need about the business and/or reporting period to write a report. Include that information and leave out any additional context that may be a distraction.

  • Plan to revisit the Business Context to ensure it stays relevant.

    • Depending on the context you provide and how much it relates to the immediate or short-term, you may want to review the Business Context quarterly or yearly.

Selecting report components

  • Include all necessary data for commentary in the report components you select.

    • The Commentary Writer only pulls information from the Business Context, Report Context, and the selected reporting components.

    • If you want commentary on trends and/or comparisons to prior periods, please ensure results for several periods are included in at least one selected component.

    • If you want commentary on a specific result, such as a KPI, account, heading, or classification, you must ensure the result is included in at least one selected component.

    • You can ask the tool to perform calculations with the data in your selected reporting components. The tool can do calculations with the following operators: +, -, *, /, ^, (). It cannot do sine and logarithmic functions.

  • Select report components that relate logically to each other to produce more coherent commentary.

    • The Commentary Writer will attempt to connect the metrics in selected components. If you don’t expect results from multiple components to influence or correlate with one another, then consider asking for commentary about them in separate chats.

Other

  • Do not give the Commentary Writer a persona. It already has the persona of a financial professional writing a report.

What are some constraints of the Commentary Writer?

There are a few important constraints to be aware of:

  • The Commentary Writer is not a chatbot.

    • It cannot answer general questions or search the web. It is designed to write accurate, relevant commentary based on the data provided in selected reporting components and saved context.

  • It does not retain chat history.

    • Once you refresh or leave a report, you cannot return to that commentary window.

    • It does not remember previous topics or instructions outside of the stored Business Context and Report Context.

    • Each request is processed independently. If you have used multiple chats when generating commentary for a report, they will not communicate with one another.

  • It cannot provide investment, legal, or industry advice.

    • It does not generate industry averages or benchmarks, and it cannot provide advice on how to do financial advisory.

  • It cannot use external data.

    • The Commentary Writer analyses only the components you add to the report and select for commentary. It cannot reference data you have not included.

    • If a metric doesn’t exist in the selected report component(s), the Commentary Writer cannot calculate or infer it from external sources. It can only calculate metrics based on the data in the selected report components.

    • It cannot access organisation-level or company-level data outside of the selected report components and the Business and Report Contexts.

  • The tool can only be used to write commentary for certain types of report components.

  • The Commentary Writer can only be used within Pro Reports. It cannot be used to generate commentary for Summary Reports.
