What is the KPI Explorer?
The KPI Explorer provides an overview of the performance of all of your active KPIs (financial and non-financial). The KPI explorer helps to identify areas of strength or weakness in the business.
A green symbol indicates that, for the selected period, a KPI has achieved a favourable result as compared to its Target (defined in 'Step 5 - Targets' of the company Settings).
A red cross, on the other hand, indicates an unfavourable result against target.
The percentage value in the middle of the KPI Explorer represents the percentage of KPIs which have achieved a favourable result or the percentage of those which are “On Track”.
The KPI Explorer is accessible from the left sidebar in the Analysis tools by selecting the 'KPI Explorer' icon.
KPI Drilldown
To find out more detail about a KPI, simply click the KPI result symbol. Additional detail on the KPI – including an explanation of the KPI, a summary trend chart, and other key numbers – will then show. You can also click 'expand formula', to drill down to the exact numbers used in the calculation.
💡Pro Tip: If you click on a KPI in the KPI Explorer and then select ‘expand formula’ in the menu that opens, you can view the exact values used to calculate the KPI results.
Customising the KPI Explorer
You're able to customise the results displaying in the KPI Explorer by,
Adding or Removing KPIs
Only active KPIs are shown in the KPI Explorer tool. Therefore, to add or remove KPIs in the tool, you must go to ‘Step 4 - KPIs’ of the company’s Settings. In the Settings, you can view active or all KPIs. Any KPIs with a green check next to them will be active and appear in the tool.
Changing the period or date range
In the top right corner of the KPI Explorer, you’re able to change the period and date range displayed in the tool. The first bolded smart text option allows you to switch between viewing monthly, quarterly, or yearly results.
The second bolded smart text option enables you to choose which month, quarter, or year’s results you are viewing.
If you imported data through the current month in ‘Step 1 - Update Data’, then you can also view results for month-to-date (MTD), quarter-to-date (QTD) or year-to-date (YTD) periods, and select the ending month for these periods.
Filtering to view on track or off track KPIs
By default, the KPI Explorer displays the results for all active KPIs. You can filter the analysis to focus only on 'off track' or 'on track' KPIs.
Sorting KPIs
You are able to select 3 different ways to view the KPI explorer. To do so, select an option from the smart text listed after ‘grouped by’. By default, the KPIs are shown by 'Perspective'.
Perspective - View KPIs based on different performance categories, such as profitability, efficiency, gearing, etc.
Result - View KPIs based on their performance for the period. KPIs on the far right have performed the best, whilst KPIs on the far left have performed the worst.
Importance - View KPIs based on their importance. The importance of a KPI can be set in ‘Step 4 - KPIs’ of the company settings.
Download a PDF of the KPI Explorer
You can download the KPI Explorer to PDF from the left sidebar. The download option is located in the bottom left corner.
The KPI Explorer can also be added to custom Fathom reports and downloaded as a PDF. You'll find the KPI Explorer as an option in the 'Layouts' section of the Report Editor.
💡Pro Tip: You have the option to include a 'Basis of Preparation' or disclaimer statement as a page in PDF downloads. You can add or remove this statement in PDFs and customise the statement. Learn more in our 'Basis of Preparation statement' article.
