How do I import data from Google Sheets into Fathom?

Please see our ‘Non-financial KPIs’ article for detailed instructions on importing data from Google Sheets into Fathom.

Data imported from Google Sheets

Which types of data can be imported into Fathom from Google Sheets?

Non-financial KPI results can be imported into Fathom via Google Sheets. It is currently not possible to import Drivers, Financials, Exchange Rates, Budget data, or Target data into Fathom from Google Sheets.

Can I bring in non-financial data from other systems into Fathom via Google Sheets?

Yes. Some systems have direct integrations with Google Sheets. Zapier or other third-party apps can also be used to help populate Google Sheets documents with data from other systems.

For those systems that do not have a Google Sheets integration and do not allow for Zapier or third-party app integration, then data can still be entered or copied over into Google Sheets manually to be imported into Fathom.

Can I import data calculated by formulas in Google Sheets?

Yes. Fathom will simply import the numerical results from Google Sheets. This means that you can include and create formulas in a Google Sheet referencing other cells (including cells in other tabs and other Google Sheets) and Fathom will simply read and import the results of those formulas. This functionality is currently not available for Excel imports.

Can I import annual and quarterly non-financial KPI results into Fathom via Google Sheets?

The Google Sheets connection currently only allows for monthly non-financial KPI results to be imported for a company.

Automatic Updates

How often will the data update?

You’re able to turn on automatic updates for Google Sheets connections so that data will be updated once every 24 hours. For instant updates, the 'Sync' option allows you to perform a manual update as needed.

💡Pro Tip: Automatic updates for Google Sheets are turned off by default and must be turned on to be enabled.

Automatic updates are enabled on a connection-by-connection basis. This means that if you have multiple Google Sheets or tabs connected to one company or one Google Sheet connected to multiple companies, you can enable automatic updates for each individual connection.

Example: Company A has two tabs from the same Google Sheet connected to import non-financial data (Sheet 1 and Sheet 2). Sheet 1 has automatic updates turned on and will update in Fathom once every 24 hours. Sheet 2 does not have automatic updates turned on and will only update when the sync option is manually selected.

Managing connections between Google Sheets and Fathom

Can I import non-financial data for a company from multiple sources (e.g. Google Sheets, Excel, and manual entry)?

Yes, a company can have non-financial data imported from Google Sheets, Excel, and manually entered into Fathom. All of these data will be displayed on the non-financials page. KPIs sourced from Google Sheets are marked with a lightning bolt icon.

Can I import data from multiple Google accounts?

Yes, you are able to connect to multiple Google accounts with a single company or Fathom account.

Can I import data from multiple Google Sheets into one company?

Yes, you are able to connect to multiple Google Sheets to import non-financial data into one company in Fathom.

Can I import data from multiple tabs in a single Google Sheet?

Can I have one Google Sheet connected to multiple companies in Fathom?

Can I transfer non-financial KPI results previously imported from Excel to Google Sheets?

Yes. This process is detailed in our 'Creating a Master Google Sheet' article.

Needed permissions

Which permissions do I have to have in Google Sheets to be able to import data into Fathom?

You need to have access to the Google Sheet to make the connection with Fathom. This means you must have viewer, commenter, or editor permissions in Google to connect the Google Sheet to Fathom.

Data imported from Google Sheets can only be edited within the Google Sheet and synced with Fathom. The data cannot be edited within Fathom. So, you will need to have editor permissions in Google to be able to edit the data from the Google Sheet.

Which permissions do I have to have in Fathom to be able to import data from Google Sheets?

The ‘Advisor/Editor’ or ‘Admin’ roles in Fathom will automatically grant a user the ability to import non-financial data into Fathom from Google Sheets.

‘Client/Viewer’ level users must have the ‘Update Non-financials’ and ‘Select KPIs’ permissions turned on in ‘Advanced User Permissions’ to be able to connect a Google Sheet to Fathom. Only the ‘Update Non-financials’ permission is needed to update non-financial data from already connected Google Sheets.
