What do I need to forecast in Fathom?

Can I forecast for quarterly or yearly companies? Can I forecast without actuals data? Why can't I access the forecasting tool?

Updated yesterday

This feature is included with Fathom Pro - the plan with access to all of Fathom's features. Companies on Portfolio can be upgraded to Fathom Pro at any time.

Requirements to access Forecasting

You can access the Forecasting tool for a Fathom Pro company from the 'My Companies' page by clicking on the Forecast tile or Telescope icon.

To forecast for a connected Fathom Pro company, the company must:

  1. Have at least one period of both the Profit & Loss and Balance Sheet imported. The Balance Sheet must have at least one account classified as Current Earnings and one account classified as Retained Earnings. The period does not need to have actuals data.

    and

  2. Be importing data on a monthly basis. Companies importing only quarterly or annual periods are not able to forecast.

User requirements

If you are not able to see the ‘Forecast’ icon, you may need to have your Fathom user permissions updated to include Forecasting access. An administrator for your Fathom account can update your access.

How do I meet the requirements to forecast in Fathom?

Upload a Profit & Loss and Balance Sheet

If the connected company that you are working in does not have both a Profit & Loss and Balance Sheet, you will want to go ahead and import this data from your source system into Fathom via ‘Source Data’ in your company’s Settings.

If I don't have financial data, can I still forecast in Fathom?

If you do not have any historical data, you can still forecast in Fathom. You can have all zero-values for your imported financials (e.g. all $0’s for at least one period) and forecast in Fathom. You need to import the chart of accounts for the Profit & Loss and Balance Sheet into Fathom. Once these line items are imported into Fathom, you’re able to forecast.

Fathom requires a Profit & Loss and Balance Sheet to forecast because our forecasting tool calculates an indirect method 3-way forecast. We read changes in your P&L and Balance Sheet accounts to forecast your cash balance into the future.

Monthly Data Import

Fathom allows you to connect companies with monthly, quarterly or annual data collection and import periods. Fathom forecasts based on monthly periods and requires monthly historicals for future forecasting.

If you are currently trying to forecast for a quarterly or annual company, you will want to delete and reconnect the company with monthly data upon import.

Still cannot see the forecasting tool?

If you have fulfilled both company criteria and have the appropriate user permissions, and you are still unable to access Fathom forecasting, feel free to reach out to support@fathomhq.com.
