Accountant Tips: How to choose your Fathom plan

Decide which subscription plan combination best fits your goals – for accountants in practice

Updated this week

Plan Options

Fathom offers two types of plans: Fathom Pro and Portfolio. Fathom Pro is designed for advisory clients, while a Portfolio plan enables accountants to import all their firm’s clients into Fathom.

In the context of this article, advisory clients are considered clients who receive services like management reports, custom KPI tracking, and/or forecasting. Non-advisory clients only receive services like tax compliance and/or bookkeeping services.

You can use a combination of plans to ensure features suit your clients' and firm's needs.

Plan features

When importing a client's company into Fathom, you choose to import it onto a Fathom Pro plan or a Portfolio plan.

The plan type determines which features can be accessed.

📝 Note: Only cloud-sourced (i.e. Xero, QuickBooks Online, MYOB AccountRight Live, and Sage Business Cloud) companies can be imported onto Portfolio plans.

Companies imported from Excel or a desktop source (i.e. QuickBooks Desktop, MYOB AccountRight, and Sage 50 Accounts) must be imported onto Fathom Pro plans.

You can use one or both types of plans in your Fathom organisation. Fathom Pro companies will be included in a Fathom Pro subscription plan. Portfolio companies will be included in a Portfolio subscription plan.

Your monthly invoice will include any plans you have subscribed to, summing to a total monthly charge.

Trying out Fathom for the first time?

If you’re new to Fathom and on a trial, we recommend importing at least one company onto a Fathom Pro plan during your trial.

You won’t have to subscribe to a plan until the end of your trial, so you can try out all the features included in Fathom Pro for free during your trial period.

Which plan do you start with?

To determine which Fathom plan combination suits your needs, you need to consider your immediate and end goals.

Have specific client requirements?

This strategy is ideal for accountants who have received specific reporting, forecasting, or consolidation requests from clients.

You can start by setting up those clients as Fathom Pro companies and addressing their immediate requests or needs.

Then, import more clients into Fathom as Portfolio companies. Use the Insights Dashboard to monitor the financial performance of all Fathom Pro and Portfolio clients.

Immediate Goal(s)

End Goal(s)

Begin using Fathom for a specific client or clients who need to:

  • Track and report on custom metrics

  • Forecast

  • Consolidate companies

Monitor all your clients or a significant portion of your client base. Use Fathom to:

  • Identify clients who may benefit from additional services

  • Engage identified clients with a summary report

  • Upgrade specific clients to Fathom Pro, as needed

Start with: Fathom Pro plan

Grow with: Fathom Pro and Portfolio plans

💡Smart Tip: Cloud-sourced and Excel companies can be imported in bulk.

You can also use the Insights Dashboard to identify clients who are underperforming or significantly growing. Create summary reports for those clients and discuss additional services. You can upgrade a Portfolio company to Fathom Pro at any time.

To start with a Fathom Pro only plan, you would select 'None' under the Portfolio plan options when selecting your subscription plans.

Focused on building your advisory services?

This strategy is ideal for accountants who want to:

  • Offer additional services to their existing client base

  • Slowly transition their existing clients to Fathom

You can start by importing your clients as Portfolio companies. Use the Insights Dashboard to monitor the financial performance of all imported clients.

Continue to monitor all clients and identify those with additional needs.

  • Track and report on custom metrics

  • Forecast

  • Consolidate companies

Start with: Portfolio plan

Grow with: Portfolio and Fathom Pro plans

💡Smart Tip: Cloud-sourced and Excel companies can be imported in bulk.

You can use the Insights Dashboard to identify clients who may benefit from additional advisory services. For example, clients who are underperforming or significantly growing. Create summary reports for those clients to show them when you offer advisory services.

💡Smart Tip: A regular meeting, such as an annual review, is a great time to present the summary report, have a richer conversation, and discuss additional ways you can help your clients.

💡Smart Tip: You may find our 'Management Reporting & KPIs' and 'Forecasting' one-pagers as helpful collateral when discussing advisory benefits with clients.

You can upgrade a Portfolio company to Fathom Pro at any time to take advantage of tailored reporting, custom metric tracking, and forecasting.

To start with a Portfolio only plan, you would select 'Portfolio Only' under the Fathom Pro plan options when selecting your subscription plans.

Providing advisory services to all clients?

This strategy is ideal for accountants with smaller practices, or teams within practices, who are focused on providing in-depth advisory services to all their clients.

You can start by importing a client or clients with more immediate requests or needs into Fathom as a Fathom Pro company.

Focus on setting up these initial clients, then continue to import existing and new clients as Fathom Pro companies.

Immediate Goal(s)

End Goal(s)

Begin using Fathom for a specific client or clients who need to:

  • Consolidate companies

  • Track and report on custom metrics

  • Forecast

Provide advisory services to all your clients and import new clients as Fathom Pro companies.

Start with: Fathom Pro plan

Grow with: Fathom Pro plan

All imported companies appear on the Insights Dashboard. So, you can monitor your clients’ performance across multiple metrics in one place.

To start with a Fathom Pro only plan, you would select 'None' under the Portfolio plan options when selecting your subscription plans.

Not advisory focused?

This strategy is ideal for teams not focused on advisory who want to measure the performance of their clients across multiple accounting systems and differentiate their offering.

You can start by importing your clients on a Portfolio plan. Use the Insights Dashboard to monitor the financial performance of all imported clients.

Immediate Goal(s)

End Goal(s)

Monitor all your clients or a significant portion of your client base. Use Fathom to:

  • Identify clients who may need outreach

  • Engage existing clients with a summary report

Continue to monitor all clients and identify those who are struggling or growing.

You may provide summary reports to all your clients to differentiate your services from competitors.

Start with: Portfolio plan

Grow with: Portfolio plan

💡Smart Tip: Cloud-sourced and Excel companies can be imported in bulk.

To differentiate your services from competitors, you may consider providing summary reports to all your clients.

To start with a Portfolio only plan, you would select 'Portfolio Only' under the Fathom Pro plan options when selecting your subscription plans.

How do you decide?

The framework outlined above is not one-size-fits-all, and your chosen plans are unique to your circumstances.

Rather than starting with one plan type, you may want to start with companies on both plans to take advantage of the Insights Dashboard from the beginning and serve specific client needs.

Each plan type has tiers based on the number of clients you have imported onto that plan. You can choose the size of each plan to suit your needs.
