Understanding the compare tool

The compare tool enables the comparative analysis of multiple entities on a single metric. This tool helps you to see the big picture - by enabling you to compare all of your companies, clients, or franchisees in a benchmark group.

Each dot on the compare scatter plot represents a company. The vertical position of the dot represents the company's performance relative to its peers. The horizontal position of the dot represents the "sorting" of the companies according to the segmentation for the group.

The 50th percentage rank on the right-hand side of the tool represents the median result in a given comparison. The 75th and 25th percentile indicators show if a company is positioned in the top or bottom quartiles.

The size of the dot is defined by the primary metric selected in Step 3 of the Benchmarking Group set up. The larger the dot, the higher the result of the primary metric for that entity. The default 'primary metric' is Revenue.

💡Pro Tip: Because the dot size is determined by the result of the primary metric, a larger dot does not necessarily indicate better performance for the entity according to the primary metric. For example, a larger dot when the primary metric is ‘Accounts Receivable Days’ means that a company is taking longer to receive revenue from its customers, which is a detriment to cash flow.

Sorting the compare tool

At the top of the compare tool, you’ll see bolded options that are variable selectors. Clicking on an option reveals a drop down menu to select options for that variable.

  • Variable 1: This selector enables you to choose which KPI you would like to see in the analysis.

  • Variable 2: This selector enables you to select which companies you'd like to highlight in the analysis. For example, 'Vanderlay Coffee Roasters' is highlighted below, including its rank and result on the metric selected (Revenue).

  • Variable 3: This selector enables you to choose the way the horizontal axis is sorted. Companies can be sorted alphabetically, by result, or according to a category made during segmentation.

Interacting with the compare tool

Interacting with the dots

When you hover the mouse cursor over a dot, it will reveal the company name and associated result. If a user does not have permissions to view a company’s name, then the company will simply be listed as Company #1, 2, 3, etc. Clicking on a dot will add that company to those which are 'highlighted' to show the company name.

Interacting with the segments

Clicking on the name of a segment (listed along the bottom horizontal axis) - will focus the analysis on companies which are positioned in that segment. The statistics at the top of the analysis will update to reflect this focus.

Interacting with the zoom function

The zoom function enables you to focus on a certain range of results in the tool (or to exclude outliers from the current view). For instance, you could choose to only show those with a Revenue greater than $1mil.

Downloading and Sharing

The Compare Tool cannot be downloaded from inside the Benchmark Analysis section. However, any company that is included in the Benchmark Group, can access and download this tool to PDF within their respective company’s Analysis tools.
