Fathom allows you to forecast financial results up to 3 years into the future. These future periods can be viewed by scrolling from left to right. You can also view up to 12 months of actuals from the forecasting grid. The headings down the left hand side bar are fixed and will be visible when scrolling left and right into future periods. From the main grid, you can modify the value of line items, change value and timing rules, and drill into your headings and subheadings to view the impacts on accounts.

Chart of Accounts

The Fathom main grid, accessed by the ‘Telescope’ icon, allows you to toggle between the Profit & Loss, Balance Sheet, Driver grid, and Cash Flow Statement. On the main grid, you can view and edit the forecast values and view your cash position line/quick metrics line, giving you a quick indication of the impact of future financial results.

The main grid mirrors the structure of your chart of accounts, sharing the classifications, account names, and custom headings and subheadings. If you need to review or update these, you’ll do so in the Company ‘Settings > Step 3: Chart of Accounts’.

You can click on a heading or arrow to expand or collapse these headings, to view individual account movements or the overall subtotals.

Profit & Loss

By clicking into the value cell, you can view the calculation rules, or ‘value rules’ applied to an amount on the Profit and Loss. This will open a right-hand side bar that will show you the default rule being used to calculate your forecast values and the applied timing rules.

By clicking on any account name, the right hand editing panel will open, giving you an overview of the value and timing rule timeline, as well as the option to change the global settings applied to this account. Here you can change the default account linkages and any applied tax rules.

Balance Sheet

On the Balance Sheet, clicking into the value cell, will open the right-hand side bar to review movements in the Profit & Loss and any microforecasts that impact the Balance Sheet account. From here, you can click the 'Magnifying Glass' icon to see a detailed view of the movements that impact the Balance sheet.

From this menu you will also be able to add schedules or journals to account for one-off or recurring Balance Sheet movements, or journals to account for movements that impact more than one balance sheet account.

Drivers Grid

The Drivers grid will display all non-financial data & metrics used within the forecast to create formulas. You can add new drivers from this screen as well as categorize these drivers and populate the data used. Like the Profit & Loss, clicking the value cell will reveal the rule being used to calculate future values.

Within the main grid you’re also able to see the impact of any microforecasts you have added to the baseline forecast. Showing the breakout of the associated financial results with these events. You can toggle between all of the scenarios that have been set up to seamlessly compare the financial outcomes of different predicted performance and events across the business or group.

Cash Flow Statement

The Cash Flow Statement is not interactive like other areas of the main grid. You can scroll from left to right, but you cannot change value or timing rules from the Cash Flow Statement. Instead, the changes you make in the Profit & Loss and Balance Sheet will impact the Cash Flow Statement and the statement will update accordingly. This way you can always check in on your operating, financing, and investing cash flow streams while you are forecasting in Fathom.
